A quantum knot, but Dall-E

Local Information

The TQFT Spring School will be held at the Faculty of Arts and Administration Building, room A-2065, at Memorial University of Newfoundland. MUN's campuses are situated in the traditional territories of the Beothuk, Mi'kmaq, Innu, and Inuit peoples.

Getting here

We will be able to cover six nights of housing: Sunday, May 19, to Saturday, May 25. We plan to have classes in the mornings, 9am to 1pm, Monday-Friday, and there will be problem sessions in the evenings, 8pm to 10pm, Monday through Thursday.

St. John's International Airport (YYT) is approximately 6km from campus. Taxis are available at the airport, and the ride to campus takes about 10 minutes. There is also a bus that runs from the airport to the MUN Centre; it takes about 40 minutes and does not run very often.

Rooms

Students will be housed in shared double suites at Macpherson College: each room consists of two private dorm-style bedrooms and one shared bath. Students who wish to have their own suite can do so, but by default we will only be able to pay half of the suite cost; students who need private suites for accessibility reasons are asked to contact the organizers. By default, suites will be assigned randomly, ignoring all demographic questions including gender. During the registration process, students will have the opportunity to request a specific suitemate and/or a same-gender suitemate.

MacPherson provides linen, towels, toilet paper, body wash, and shampoo. They do not have housekeeping but if you run out of any of the above you can request more. To check in at the front desk, you need to be able to show an ID. It is possible to check in and get the card key 24/7. Be thoughtful of your suitemate when you enter the room late at night.

Housing is offered from Sunday check-in to Saturday check-out. Participants who wish to stay longer should expect to pay $140/night.

Internet

MUN maintains an open wifi network "MemorialGuest" on all of campus. There is also the more secure eduroam for those with access.

Food

Food options on campus are limited. Just off campus (10 minute walk), there are some restaurants at Churchill Square. Downtown is a 30-minute walk from campus, and has many restaurants and bars. The city's public transit system is Metrobus.

Some fruit and pastries will be available at 8:15am each day in the lecture hall. For full meals, we recommend finding off-campus restaurants.

Potential confusions

  1. Atlantic Canada has two similarly-named cities: St. John's, NL and Saint John, NB. These cities are about 1000 miles apart. The TQFT Spring School will be in Newfoundland, not New Brunswick.

  2. Newfoundland is in the Newfoundland Time Zone, 30 minutes offset from Atlantic (Halifax) Time and 90 minutes offset from Eastern (New York, Toronto) Time.
